After anchoring out for a week in Rodriguez Key and waiting for a weather window we decided to go back up to Miami because there was no window in sight for the following week according to the weather predictions. We made it to Miami on April 2nd with sunny skies and 13 knot winds. We were able to motor-sail reaching up to 6.5 knots and we even turned off the engine for a while using only the sails to propel us. We had a bumpy night anchored north of Angelfish Creek on the Atlantic side and the trip to Miami was not smooth due to the wakes from all the mega yachts and big power boats that sped all around us. I will never understand why they get so close to us when they are so maneuverable and fast compared to our boat. Their wakes make the seas like a washing machine out there and we just get tossed around, which is not comfortable. If you ever have a power boat, stay as far away from sailboats as possible or go slow around them.
On a different note, we got to see some dolphins on our way up to Miami. It never gets old for me to see dolphins, so I have included a video clip (I was lucky enough to be able to capture it on my camera). Enjoy! :)
We are moored at Dinner Key marina and we like their hot showers, free water taxi service to the marina from our boat, and location in Miami (Coconut Grove). The mooring is not as protected as we would like, but it is not bad. The staff at the marina are friendly and helpful. There is a public library nearby, which is nice. We don't like that this marina doesn't have wi-fi, but there is a bookstore nearby with it. CoCo Walk is a nice area within walking distance that has shops and restaurants. The MetroRail and bus stops are not too far away to get access to other parts of Miami. It costs $2 for a ride. There is more to say I am sure but we haven't ventured out much in the area yet so I will give an update later.
We are happy to return to Miami for their empanadas and churros. Yum! :) It is nice to be in a place where there are more places to go and have an easier time in obtaining things we need or want. Marathon was limited, but it was the best place to be... in the Florida Keys. I read that Monroe County (Marathon) is the most expensive place to live in all of Florida. It's no wonder there were so many people living on boats. It is cheaper to live on a boat than on land with their rental costs.
The Sandbar Grill (sports bar) has good "Joey" wings and they are known for their fish tacos, but I haven't tried one yet. We like the Cuban food at Las Culebrinas. I have enjoyed the Ropa Vieja (Shredded Beef Cuban Style), Pork Tenderloin stuffed with plantains, and Skirt Steak with Chimichurri Sauce. We haven't found any other good places to mention yet.
